Snowmen

In kindergarten, students select and work with a variety of materials and begin organizing and arranging them in to create something new.

This week, students were given a variety of materials and asked what they could make. Students eagerly took to the task and created many different and exciting projects.

Here are some of their creations:

Sultaan made a replica of "Godzilla"

Jairo created "an alien wearing a scarf so he can go to the moon."

Siya made a "polar bear because polar bears are white."

Jessie created a "butterfly".

One creation that made several appearances was snowmen. Rahaan explained that a snowman made sense because, "it's still winter and it is something we can make outside."

Here are a few of our snowmen:

After seeing so many snowmen, we decided to asked the questions, "What do you know about snowmen?". Here is a look at what students already know about snowmen:

After discussing what we know, we also had a chance to build our vocabulary and talk about the different parts of a snowman, including: a big circle at the bottom, medium circle in the middle, a small circle at the top, a hat, a scarf, a carrot nose, two eyes, a mouth and 3 buttons.

When students arrived at school the next day, many started independently building their own snowmen stories using their own materials.

Boys and girls then had the chance to go and build their own snowmen

as well as participate in a guided drawing activity and share with their peers:

At home, you can practice drawing snowmen and discussing the different parts to help build vocabulary. Students are also encouraged to go outside and enjoy building snowmen!
