Early literacy skills in kindergarten begin
by teaching students how to draw a recognizable person by using simple shapes.
By learning how to use shapes to draw people, we strengthen the muscles in our
hands and teach them how to make different types of lines. Later, when we begin
writing, students will rely on these skills to begin writing letters.
To help boys and girls learn how to draw a
recognizable person, we introduced them to our friend, MAT MAN.
MAT MAN is a person made up entirely of shapes.
Students were given a checklist to help
them create their own MAT MAN and encouraged to try and make it look like
them.
Students
are encouraged to try and use their shapes to create recognizable people at
home as well!
