Valentine's Day Reminder

Just a reminder that tomorrow, February 12th, we will be celebrating Valentine's Day in the classroom. If you would like, you can send cards to school with your child to give to classmates.

Please remember:
- bringing cards is optional
- if you wish to send cards, there must be 1 for every child in the class
            AM has 24 students
            PM has 20 students
- if bringing cards, your child must only write their name on the cards (not the names of classmates)
- please do not send any treats to school

In the classroom, we have also been talking about the colours we see around Valentine's Day. If you wish, your child can wear Valentine's Day colours to school tomorrow, such as pink, red, or purple.

*Please note* If your child's home reading day is usually Thursday, you can send it to school on Wednesday, February 12, so that you have new books over the long weekend!

Thank you!

Snowflake Experts

This week, we continued to build on our knowledge and understanding of snowflakes in order to become snowflake experts. We learned that snowflakes all have six lines and that every line is the same. We also learned that we could make our own unique snowflake designs using letters or shapes.

First, we explored drawing snowflakes together using shapes.

Next, we watched a video with a snowflake expert that taught us how to make snowflakes using letters.

Then, we explored with a variety of materials, such as pattern blocks and loose parts, in order to build our own snowflakes.

Last, we experimented with lines and shapes to make unique snowflakes designs.

Students also had a chance to share what they learned about snowflakes. Here are a few of their comments:

Avalynn: "A snowflake has it's own design."
Gul: "I know a snowflake has an "x" and a line.. shapes."
Mahtab: "Snowflake has 6 lines."
Nyada: "they come from the sky and there's little pieces of water and when they bump they make a big rain drop and the cold makes a snowflake."
Siya: "I know they have 6 lines and they're really really beautiful and they have designs and they are made of snow."

Valentine's Day

February 14th is Valentine’s Day!

Children may bring in Valentine’s Day cards for classmates if they wish on Wednesday, February 12th.

Please consider the following:
•   Bringing Valentine’s Day cards to school is optional
•   If bringing cards, your child must have one for every student in their class
•   There are 24 students in our AM KINDERGARTEN class
•   There are 20 students in our PM KINDERGARTEN class
•   Your child is only to sign their name on each card (please do not address them to specific students in the class).
•   Your child can write his/her own name as it is good practice for them, or you can do it with them if you wish.
•   A good idea is to write a few cards each day so that it is an enjoyable task.
•   Please do not send in any food or treats

Thank you,
Mrs. Beaton

Snowflakes

During our snow inquiry, we asked the question, “Where does snow come from?”

Students made predictions and shared their ideas by drawing detailed pictures and by sharing verbally. Next, we watched a video to learn where snow really comes from. We learned that snow comes from the clouds when the rain gets cold and turns to ice, making snowflakes. To practice documenting our knowledge and understanding, boys and girls practiced drawing the story of where snow comes from and labeling their pictures.

After learning that snowflakes fall from clouds, we started to wonder, "What do we know about snowflakes?". First, we discussed what we knew and wrote down some ideas, then we did more research to learn more about snowflakes.

From our research, we saw how individual snowflakes were formed and learned that all snowflakes are made up of 6 lines and all snowflakes are different or unique- just like us!

Students then went to investigate snowflakes by looking at pictures and books. Part of Science in kindergarten is becoming aware of our five senses to explore, investigate and describe our word. Students acted as scientists exploring snowflakes closely and used their sense of sight to describe and observe what snowflakes look like.

Here are a few of the observations our scientists made:

Harleen: "I see a little flower looks like a circle.. it has pointy's then some lines."

Mehreen: "I see a snowflake little design here.. it looks like lightning bolt."

Rayan: "I see a hexagon.. and a little guitar."

Nyada: "I see these little things that look like petals.. I see a crown."

Xieanne: "I see it has 6 keys."

Divjot: "I see teeny, tiny triangles."

Keeratdeep: "I see a spider web."

Shahran: "I see a rocket ship.. I see a shield.. I see pizza."
